Welcome to Mars Hill, home of the Lowell Observatory and ceramicist
Jerry McGlothlin.
Nestled atop Flagstaff’s Mars Hill is the studio and home
of Jerry McGlothlin,
a versatile ceramicist who creates functional, elegant works in
stoneware and porcelain. His studio occupies a unique space —
the old C.O. Lampland Dome on the grounds of the Lowell Observatory,
where astronomers discovered the planet Pluto in 1930.
Jerry has been working with clay since 1976. He uses a two-step,
high-temperature firing process that gives his stoneware pieces
— mugs, pitchers, platters,
bowls, vases,
and lidded jars —
their characteristic warm, rustic glow. He also works with finer
porcelain clays and participates in wood firings at Northern Arizona
University from time to time. Regardless of the techniques and media
he uses, Jerry manages to blend form and function in creative ways.
In addition to throwing pots, Jerry also teaches ceramics classes
at Coconino Community College. He will be featured in the September
issue of Flagstaff’s Mountain
Living Magazine.
We invite you to browse a selection of works and learn more about
Mars Hill Ceramics.
Be
sure to visit Mars Hill Ceramics during Open Studios this coming September.
